Make me smarter….
Posted by danleone on March 23rd, 2008 filed in imponderableAs you know, I am an atheist. Many people believe that is because I am too ignorant of the facts of Christianity. Of course, I argue that I know more about the Bible and religions in general than many of my Christian friends. But that does not matter to them, because I can never argue the whole “faith”component of religion, which some people fall back on when I question their logic.
So, here is a chance to make me smart.
Can anyone tell me what do the Easter Bunny and chicken eggs have to do with:
A. Each other
B. The resurrection of Jesus
For that matter, what do Santa Clause and shopping malls have to do with the birth of Jesus?
Obviously, I am being facetious and am not so stupid as to believe that those pagan rituals and Hallmark creations have ANYTHING to do with the true meaning of the holidays. But, every once in a while it bears remembering…for both Christians and non-Christians.
Happy Easter everyone who is celebrating and Happy Day for all who are not.
I love these holidays, Christian or otherwise, and take them as an opportunity to reflect on the things that mean the most to me. So please know, I am forever grateful for your friendships, tolerance and your words!

For the sake of getting slammed…Easter BUNNY is a Pagan, wiccan symbol of fertility…as are eggs.
Thats the simple answer. This time of year the Vernal equinox is also known as Eoster or Ostara- also Pagan and older religious cultures.
Adopted by the Roman’s and other religious orders, when attempting to convert the people to their(the ruling parties) religions.
Thats the simple and the short of it! Happy Spring!

I’m also wondering when Easter became the spring version of Christmas. My kid got to make a basket out of construction paper and paint eggs. No candy, none of that crap. On the other hand, every other child I know seems to have scored gifts that include: sandboxes, slip-n-slides, motorized cars (the big ones), jungle gyms… what the heck is that about?

There definitely is a lot of commercialism. As far as Christians go, Easter should be a much bigger even than Christmas is. At least in my view. And I don’t think of any of our modern traditions as being pagan rituals, I think of them as being symbolic traditions of Christian beliefs. Bunnies and eggs? It’s obvious, isn’t it? At least to me. Am I being argumentative? Do you know me well enough yet to let me be that way?

In this country, religion and morality are viewed as inseparable. In practice, I don’t see a correlation at all. I know both very moral and very immoral Christians and atheists. Personally I don’t need a book or a big bearded man on a cloud in the sky to tell me what I already know in my heart.

i agree orginally the easter bunny was a symbol of fertility in the pagan religion i am un shure how the xtians have twisted it so now i just refer to easter as choloate bunny day
and the colored egs singled the start to spring for the pagans so that the long wolf night was over
