The Bible, for sure. I can't tell you how many times I have read it. Also, the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I was 4 the first time I read it. Yes, four.

The first book? Don Quixote in Spanish. You can be utterly crazy, but the point of life is to have a dream.

But the last book that inspired me was The Sparrow. It made me want to believe in God.

like daizie, i'd need a post to fully address this ... but the first stand-out was Robert Heinlein's Space Cadet. not his best book, but it was the thickest book in my elementary school library when i stumbled across it. i was tired of going to the library after every other class, because i'd finished another book already. i wanted a book to last me at least a whole school day. the heinlein book fit the bill ... not just because it was thicker than anything else, but because it made me think. it had race issues; it had local prejudices; it asked "who will watch the watchers."

and it got me hooked on other science fiction that also prompted further thinking.

I've just googled the book and found out it was a russian prison camp he escaped from and not a concentration camp.

And there was a film too in 2003. I'm too sensitive these days to watch that though.

A book called I am David, about a boy who escaped from a concentration camp, although I had no understanding of the context at the time.

Well this could be a very long answer...but I need a post...lol
to answer in short? Arthur Miller, Death of a Salesman. We read it in 6th grade. It was then my love of script writing was born.
Before that? I would have to say Twain and Laura Ingalls Wilder...yep you read that correct. Although I had been reading and writing, since I learned, I clearly remember those three in particular...followed by Steinbeck, Salinger then onto to poets...

"The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. I read this in my middle school years and it had an impact on me that resonates today. It also had an influence on how I view women. When I learned the S stood for Susan I thought, cool.

I'm having trouble narrowing it down to one! I remember reading Judy Blume's books in my early grade school years and in a search for yet more of her work, stumbling across a couple of eye openers - "Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret," and then "Forever." That's one I soon figured out that I should not let my mom stumble across!

Beverly Cleary's Ramona books. At the tender age of eight, I knew then that I wanted to write to make people laugh. She is the one person in this world that I'd get emotional if I got a chance to meet her - she made that big of an impression!
