I am freaked out about how many of the felons in my area committed sex related crimes. I guess its better to know where they are, though.

I really enjoy reading your blog, it always has great insight. But I am very frustrated with the media’s lack of questions to the presidential candidates about global warming. Now that it is down to just a few candidates I would think that this would be an issue.

Live Earth just picked up this topic and put out an article ( http://www.liveearth.org/news.php ) live earth is also asking why the presidential candidates are not being solicited for their stance on the issue of the climate change. I just saw a poll on www.EarthLab.com that says people care a lot about what their next leader thinks of global warming. Does anyone know of another poll or other results about this subject?

Here is the page where I saw the EarthLab poll: http://www.earthlab.com/life.aspx. This is a pretty legit website; they are endorsed by Al Gore and the alliance for climate protection and they have a carbon footprint calculator. Does anyone have a strong opinion about this like I do? No matter what your political affiliation is or who you vote for this is an important issue for our environment, our economy and for homeland security.

Yeah I am not sure how I truly feel about such sites. One yes there is the Federal Sex offenders site, and yes it can be "useful"(I use that very loosely) to be in the Know to protect our children.
And yet being a person who values rights, and if a person does time and completes all that they are by law to do...
My fear isnt about violating their rights, not at all. They committed a crime and by their own choices are subject to certain criteria and loss of certain privledges. I am for that, and get that...
It is the people of our society who would play vigilante. Take it upon themselves to "cure" the world. We had a case here in CT where a neighbor stabbed another, sue to the man's belief one was after their child.
Do I get that, as a parent? Yes I do. Does it mean its correct?
Now this site? Is scary in the respect that anyone can post anything? That is just wrong, and I can see someone out for revenge against someone and then some "cowboy" decides he will take care of things and a tragedy unfolds.
In short- sex offender list? Yes. Maintained by law enforcement.
SHould be people take everything they read as truth? Nah do a little more research before we ostracize.

I'm in two minds about this sort of information being available. In the UK the names and addresses of sex offenders are not published, although there are many who campaign for them to be so.

I'm not convinced the public can be trusted with this sort of information. There was the famous incident in the UK of a paediatrician being beaten within an inch of their lives because their neighborsdidn't know the difference between paediatrician and pedophile.

In addition I'm not convinced of the authorities being able to keep an accurate track of these people. Just last week I came across a sex offender in the course of my work and I rang probation services as I was aware that he had recently moved from another part of the country and they may have lost track of him. They refused to take his details, stating it was the responsibility of the probation services where he came from to inform them he had moved to the area. Err... what if they don't know he's moved to the area?
