“LOL”
Posted by danleone on February 4th, 2008 filed in funnyAnyone over the age of three (but under the age of me) knows that LOL is the internent abbreviation for “Laughing out Loud.” There are a whole slew of these abbreviations which makes chatting and IM’ing even that much more impersonal. But in an age where the thumb is mightier than the pen, I can understand the necessity.
Everyone knows:
ROFLMAO
BRB
AFAIAC
AFK
HTH
IMHO
OMG
But I have a confession for both of you. Today, in a normal 3-dimensional-land conversation, I said “LOL!” Yup, I said, “Ell-Oh-Ell” when someone said a joke. I said it out loud. The worse part of it was, the person I said it to, did not know what LOL meant. She asked me what I just said. I repeated it, embarrassed, and she still had no idea.
Question for BoMR: Do you have a favorite internet abbreviation?
What is funny is that when I worked on the ambulance, we used a ton of abbreviations (this was in the day when the daily newspaper was the internet). My favorite was: LOLFDGB (Little Old Lady, Fall Down, Go Boom)

Hello Paisley:
AFAIAC – As far as I am concerned
AFK – Away from keyboard
HTH – Hope this helps
IMHO – In my humble opinion

Hilarious, Dan! I’m going to remember LOLFDGB because I’m probably going to need it in the near future.
My favorite work abbreviation? I can only remember one – NBG. That’s Nachos Bell Grande for you non-Taco Bellers!

I only know what three on your list mean; four, if that one really does mean “I’m a ho.”

I play an MMORPG that’s pirate themed and some words and abbreviations are filtered and made piratey.
If you type OMG it filters into “billions of blistering blue barnacles” and this can be lengthy so players started using ZOMG to avoid the filter.
That’s my favorite and yes I believe I may have used it out loud a few times. It comes out sort of like “zohmagod” when I say it.

oh my … i read this to my other half who NEVER actually laughs at internet funnies … but she liked this one a lot … particularly LOLFDGB.
as a teen, i drove my mom crazy saying WPM instead of words per minute … have no idea why that bothered her so, but apparently i was practicing for the day when the internet would be a part of daily life instead of the one character at a time crapola of the c-64 message boards.

LOL??~ZOMG!
One of these days (hopefully soon) I will actually site down and memorized them all (I need a list~!) Its like going back to school, but hey learning something new will help prevent Alzheimers!

Interesting. An acronym has so thoroughly taken over your brain that it takes the place of the action it is acronyming in the first place. (Yes, I know “acronyming” is not really a word.)
I honestly LOL’ed at that one. And you know I don’t really LOL very often.
