A post for post’s sake

I respond well to humiliation. So when Deb from Missives from Suburbia emails me saying:

You need to blog tonight. I’m getting tired of nothing new when I visit.

Then I know it is high time for me to step up. I didn’t realize that the third member of the BoMR Club (Both of My Readers Club) would have such an affect.  But I now know that I have a fickle fanbase that requires a subtle balance of rapid-fire repartee coupled  with thought-provoking posts that linger like a lover’s scent.

After my last post about gaming, I assumed that I should let that one linger. Clearly, that was not true. My last post should have been buried below the fold, if published at all.

So thank you Deb for setting me straight.  You definitely deserve a link-back! Brace youself for all the click-through’s to your excellent site. For those who do not know Deb, then you should definitely stop reading here and follow the link. Besides excellent writing, you should check out the labels she attaches to each of her posts. Here is one example from a single post: bill cosby, it’s only illegal if you get caught, mmm…hot dogs! How can anyone go wrong with that!?

This leads me to a question for BoMR: When you write a particularly thoughtful post, one that really stands out in your own head as something meaningful, do you try to let it linger a bit before you post again? Or do you simply post as the muse mandates? How does that make you feel knowing that perhaps 90% of your readers (at least my readers) never leave the top post?

personally i try to post daily on ….why paisley??? on the ink pot,, if it is my work i post on top of it,, if it is someone else’s,, i leave it up an extra day.. just paisley…. is just a warehouse so the more the merrier…. i do delve when i read blogs so i assume,,, notice the first three letters of that word,,, that others do the same…

just be you … whatever you do will be right….

On average, I give people about 5 days to read. After that, they’re dead to me.

(And sorry I haven’t been here for a while. Between the new position at work–which means I actually do some work, and Honey’s increasing need for back scratches I haven’t had time to read blogs. Shame).

Ohmygoodness! I just got a proper introduction as the third reader! Whoo-hoo! AND a ton of linky love! Golly, gosh… whatever will I do? It seems I must find a way to reciprocate. How about I send a fun meme your way? I know how you love them!

Thanks for the shameless plug, but you failed to mention my Today Show appearance. I have to milk my 5 seconds of fame, you know!!

As for your question, a friend once described me as “prolific”. The way I see it, if you throw enough shit on the wall, something is bound to stick. So I say post, post, post or risk your audience losing interest. (My readers seem to have discovered the “other entries” button, so perhaps that’s the real source of my posting frenzy.)

Because I’m new to blogging, I heard you have to post often to get people coming back for more. So, right now I’m blogging everyday, but it’s not always easy. Especially since I never set out to be known as a funny blogger, but I think that’s the rep I’ve developed, so no one wants to come to my blog to read my feelings about global warming or tax relief.

Alright, I don’t have anything profound to say about either of those subjects, but if I did, I wouldn’t really be able to blog seriously about it anyway. Curse this magnificent sense of humor!!

I tend to post a lot if I’ve done a post which I’m not happy with and want to shift it down the page as much as possible.

Which pretty much means I post every day as I keep replacing the old dross with new dross.

The muse rules most of the time. I have many posts that I particularly enjoyed and actually thought,”hey not too bad” and then I bury it with some inane blather.
Its a catch 22, I think. If I leave the same post up for more than two(three stretching) days, it ‘feels’ as if people dont come around as much. Yet if I post daily, there arent as many comments/feedback.

  7. Sleeping Beauty Says:

Thats a good thought! I have noticed, if mine are left up before posting new, I get more comments. But…..to my defense I have 3 kids and work so I blog at night and sometimes I get tired lol. So I make a point to do it at least every 3 days. But I am new to blogging, I have to comments people’s pages a million times just to get one comment in return, so when a person who comments my page (that I did not comment) SWEET! I have found in my stats that people are reading theh previous posts, just not commenting, and that is perfectly fine too!

  8. Loz Says:

I’ve found I’m writing less and reading more so the consequence is that the posts stay at the top longer and the number of comments on each has increased and I have enjoyed that part of it. I’ve also been writing some stuff that I can’t blog about because it needs to be private.

  9. Lilacspecs Says:

I try to post every other day. I started blogging again after 3 years of laying low to get myself writing. Plus my boyfriend bugs me if I go more than 3 days without a post. Plus, more people have started reading. So, if nothing else, I toss a list or a meme or pics up so people keep stopping by.

  10. Avery Says:

I can’t read your blog! One of your comments (by Deb, I think) is making your left column too wide. So, I might just post some inane comments until it goes away. Feel free to delete them if you like. ;o)

    Dan is awesome!

  12. Avery Says:

Dan has three letters in his first name.

  13. Avery Says:

Unless his name is Daniel. Then it has six.

(This should do it. Fingers crossed!)

  14. Avery Says:

    Man, I’m good!

  15. Great Dane Addict Says:

I post as the muse mandates. It’s super frustrating when readers don’t go past the first post.
