What Do You Listen to When Writing?

Posted by danleone on May 14th, 2007 filed in blogging

In a continuing effort to avoid writing, I was wondering what people listen to when writing. Do you listen to the same type of music that you listen to while not writing or is that too distracting? Lyrics or Atmospheric? Classical or Contemporary? New Age or Environmental?

What is on your Writer’s Playlist?

i have my tv on 24/7/365… it is always on turner classic movies… and i almost never watch it….but it is the backdrop of my thoughts at all times……

i even leave it on when i am not home for the dogs!!

when i am writing tho… really writing… i cannot hear it as it is such a static part of my world….

    I don’t listen to anything.

I’m with Heather. I find that I get far too distracted if I’m listening to music when I write. Music is such a huge part of my life though, so the balance is that I formulate my ideas while studying lyrics or something, and then give myself a bit of silence to do the writing.

I generally have something soft and relatively low tempo. If it is too intrusive I end up getting too distracted.

Jack Johnson has been on my itunes quite a bit recently.

It varies. It greatly depends on my mood and frame of mind. The tv is on 24/7 for “noise” which drives me totally insane.. But I often have my headphones on to drive out the “noise” of everyone else..

My preference is alternative rock.. With a lil bit of everything else thrown in..

Humm…I guess you could say these days I “listen” to the tick tock of a kitchen timer.

Mind you, when I am writing I am listening to my inner voice and typing out the words. In the background I hear the kitchen timer and birds chirpping outside.

I’m new to the site. You are trying to “avoid writing” and you have a text blog? I don’t get it…yet. Maybe with time and effort I’ll understand :)

    All the best,
    Nia.

What a great question. While writing papers in college, I almost exclusively listened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Since then, especially in relation to blogging, I’ve started listening to pretty much anything. At night it seems to be Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, while during the day it ranges from Europop to all forms of alternative rock, classic rock, 60s hits, and punk.

I usually have classical going on the CD player or radio. But when I need to get really juiced, I turn to Lynyrd Skynrd and “Sweet Home Alabama.”

All depends on what I am writing and the tone of the writing..
My poems and prose? Again depends on the subject…If I am reaching deep and want to spill? I listen to medieval music(Hildegard von Bingen). Seriously from century 1. or Classical. If I am script writing? Depends on the mood of the scene. Believe it or not most of my writing takes place in the wee hours and the only thing awake is me and the birds…
